From dances to divisions (variations), intabulations of songs and fantasies, lutes and guitars inspired masterpieces of every style. This programme offers the public a selection of pieces from well-known composers such as Gaspar Sanz and John Dowland as well some discoveries from composers such as Santiago de Murcia and Robert De Visée. The Red Sarafan
Russian Romanticism for Guitars and Cello
There was a huge enthusiasm for the guitar in 19th century Russia. Composers in Moscow and St. Petersburg dedicated themselves to writing for the European guitar, but also, particularily for their own unique 7-string instrument. Madeleine Owen performs this original programme on Romantic and Russian 7-string guitars with her musical partner, the cellist, Marie-Michel Beauparlant. The pair invites the public to discover a fine and forgotten repertoire of sonatas, variations on Russian folksongs and the duo's own arrangements of Russian Romances. The duo is one of a tiny number of musicians in the world bringing this repertoire back to life.
